Mental Health amid Covid-19

When will the pandemic get over? When will the situation get better?

You must have asked these questions many times and would have prayed to God to make the situation better.

The rapid spread of Covid-19 has given rise to fear, anxieties and lots of uncertainties. The pandemic has taken many lives, permanently closed down businesses and caused millions of job losses. During such tough times, it is pretty natural to feel lonely and anxious. The constant fear of getting ill, losing a loved one, losing livelihood or getting into a financial crunch often takes a toll on our mental health.

In the current scenario taking care of your mental health is as important as taking care of your physical health. While you may find many people talking about the importance of boosting immunity and staying physically fit, you may not find as many people talking about mental health.

Tips for improving your mental health

With everything that has happened and is still happening, it’s understandable if you are “feeling it” a lot more than usual. Here are some tips that may help you to alleviate your anxiety and take care of your mental health.

1. Follow a routine

While working or studying from home, it might feel like all bets are off, but it’s much better for your mental health to follow a routine as much as possible. The human mind finds comfort in the certainty and assurance of routine. Eating meals at regular times, walking, sleeping and exercising at set times, maintaining personal hygiene can help you in tackling the uncertain aspects of the day. Following a routine shall also reduce the “decision fatigue”.

2. Start an at-home exercise

Working out at home is a good way to stay healthy and utilize time. If you’re noticing that you are spending way too much time doing nothing and lying on bed, so its time for you to get up for a walk or at-home exercises in order to get active.

If you’re feeling restless or anxious, try yoga, breathing exercises or meditation. It will help soothe your mind and bring calmness.

3. Limit news inflow, social media and screen time

It is important for you to stay informed about the current scenario and the spread of Covid-19 virus. However, it is also important for you to limit the information that you are processing daily as too much news can make you feel more distressed than before. Extended Screen time and spending more time than needed on Instagram, Facebook or Whatsapp may make you feel more anxious and depressed.

4. Refocus your perspective

During the days of distress, you might lose your perspective. But there are several ways to get back to a healthy place. You can focus on things that you are genuinely grateful for, it could be as little as a cup of coffee or watching sunset, talking to family about good old days, and all other things that add joy to your life. You can connect with friends and your loved ones over a phone call or video chat.

5. Be of service, from a distance

One of the best things that we can do for the society and for ourselves is being of service. Serving others even via a small act of kindness can have immediate health benefits. Helping people by arranging food or other supplies can bring happiness to them and to you too. It helps you to recover from negative events and build resilience.

These are few tips that might be effective in reducing the increased anxiety level in current situation. We will sail through these difficult times. Take care! Be safe!
