Facts about Covid-19 Vaccines

Coronavirus, lockdown and pandemic are a few buzzwords of 2020 and 2021, but since the roll out of Covid-19 vaccines for 18+ in India, “Vaccination” is one of the most discussed topics nowadays.

Here are a few facts about the various Covid-19 vaccines:

1.  Covaxin

Developed by Bharat Biotech and ICMR of our country India, it is observed to be very effective on various mutations of the virus. This vaccine is prepared out of weak coronaviruses, so that when it is injected, our body prepares antibodies to provide protection. Two dozes are to be taken at a gap of 28 days to make it 80%-85% effective.

2. Covishield

Serum Institute of India headed by Adar Poonawalla is producing this vaccine using the formula of AstraZeneca. This is being produced at Pune. Two dozes are to be taken at a gap of 12 to 16 weeks. As per global reports, Covishield vaccine's effectiveness is nearly 90%.

3. Sputnik V

Formulated by Russia, this vaccine was formulated before all the other vaccines. This vaccine is created out of two different weak viruses. It is 91.6% effective when taken at a gap of 21 days. The unique fact about this vaccine is that the first dose differs from that of the second dose. To produce this vaccine in India, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories and six different companies have been approached.

4.  Pfizer

In America, this vaccine is being used on a large scale. It is claimed to be 95% effective, but this vaccine is to be kept at a temperature of -70°C, hence storing this vaccine is expensive for India.

5.  Novavax

It will be purchased by UNO for distribution to underdeveloped countries. It was announced to be 96.4% effective on the original strain of the virus. In India, the trial of this vaccine is done under the name of Covovax.

6.  AstraZeneca

This vaccine is developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University in collaboration. This works on RNA technology. This vaccine locks the spike protein of the coronavirus so that it does not enter our body. This vaccine is 80% effective when taken at a gap of 42 to 56 days. However, if taken within 28 days, it is 54% effective only.

7.  Moderna

This vaccine is developed by Moderna, the United Nations Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. It works on RNA technology.

8.  Johnson & Johnson

This vaccine has been developed by Johnson and Johnson Company. Only one dose of this vaccine is required and it need not be stored at freezing temperature. This vaccine is 66% effective in one dose only.

Vaccination is important to reduce Covid-19 cases. Choose your vaccine wisely and get vaccinated as soon as possible. Don’t fall prey to rumours! Stay safe!
