Threads: Twitter's New and Biggest Rival
Threads- What is it?
Launched on 6 July, 2023 by Meta,
Threads app is now gaining attraction across the industry. Within 24 hours, it
crossed the mark of "10 million" sign ups. It has been described as a
text- based conversation app which is linked closely to Instagram. It has been
designed to be a more intimate and personal way to connect with your friends.
Posts on threads are only visible to your followers and you can only follow
those people who follow you back.
Is it a part of Instagram?
Threads is a
standalone app. Though users can login using their Instagram credentials and
follow the same accounts. Meta says that Threads is an app from Instagram but
not a part of it.
How is it different from Twitter?
Though some parties
are calling Threads as "Twitter clone", there are major differences
that distinguish between the two.
- Twitter provides users with flexibility to access the platform through any web browser whereas Threads has been designed as only a mobile application.
- Feature of Hashtag is missing in the Threads app whereas it plays a crucial role in Twitter.
- Threads do not provide the option to edit texts once they have been posted whereas Twitter does provide this facility to its premium users.
- Both the apps operate differently in terms of their feed structure. Threads currently provides a single feed for all the posts whether trending or the content posted by the people you're connected with.
Rivalry between Musk and
Zuckerberg
Launch of Threads app further
adds fuel to the ongoing battle between the two tech giants- "Elon Musk
and Mark Zuckerberg". Musk has been critical of the Threads app calling it
a "copycat" of Twitter. He also tweeted that he would be happy to
invest in Threads. Responding to Musk's words, Zuckerberg stressed
that Threads is not a copycat of Twitter but is a different product with a
different focus than Twitter.
How do different nations react to
its launch?
The reactions have been mixed.
The United States has reacted positively with a little concern about the app's
integration with Instagram. Europe reacted more cautiously highlighting
concerns about the app's data collection practices. While Asia has produced
mixed reactions, some users have shown interest while others are more
skeptical.
Future Potential for Threads
Threads do have a potential to be
a major player in the social media landscape. It is a more intimate and
personal way to connect with your closest friends. Another reason could be its
integration with Instagram. Certainly, there would be tough challenges that
the app could face. But since it's in an evolving stage, it has the potential
to appeal and capture the social media landscape.
Conclusion
Overall, Threads is a
new and innovative social media app with a potential to be a major player in
the social media landscape. Although it can encounter challenges from its
competitors, it could harness the opportunity in its favor to be a major
social media platform. It will be interesting to see how Threads evolves in the
coming months and years.
