Surat Diamond Bourse: Largest Office Building in the World

Introduction

Another feather has been added to the cap of India's diamond industry. Surat Diamond Bourse which is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 21 this year, is world's biggest office space surpassing US's Pentagon building. Surat Diamond Bourse showcases the growth of Surat's diamond industry. It will also serve India in innovation and trade while fetching enormous benefits for the Indian economy.

Surpasses Pentagon

For 80 years, the iconic Pentagon building, which has a total surface area of nearly 6.5 million square feet, held the record for the largest office space in the world. The Pentagon, in Arlington, Virginia, serves as the Department of Defence of the United States' administrative centre. Over 23,000 civilian and military workers reside there. George Bergstrom created the design, John McShain built it, and it was finished in 1943 at a cost of about $83 million at the time.

Over 65,000 diamond experts, including cutters, polishers, and traders, are said to use the recently established Surat Diamond Bourse as their "one-stop destination." The size of the project was determined by demand rather than the competition brief, which did not include exceeding the Pentagon.

Inspiration for the building
A "smart" city is to be constructed on around 700 hectares (1,730 acres) in south Surat as part of an ambitious proposal. The new diamond nexus would act as the neighbourhood's "anchor tenant". Inside the megastructure, the designers made sure that the Bourse offered an even playing field for large and small firms.
However, diamond trading occurs outside of official workplace settings in India. As a result, nine courtyards with seats and water elements have been designed by the architects in order to foster social interaction while maintaining the traditional "bazaar" atmosphere.

Green Building Concept
The building's design is attentive to the industry's reliance on sunshine, particularly for the grading and assorting of diamonds, and is centred on energy efficiency. As a result, all workplace spaces have enough of natural light .With each office having a view of the artistically constructed outdoor courts, which are designed on the concept of "Panchtatva" (Air, Water, Fire, Earth, and Sky) and are about 200 feet wide and 300 feet long, all of the offices are centrally air conditioned by chilled water-cooling systems. Additionally, it will feature 100% power backup in the offices and communal areas.
Aside from the breathtaking aesthetics and landscape that were taken into consideration when designing this facility, Sustainability is one of the most crucial factors. Considered factors for the same include Microclimate, which helps to keep the temperature consistent in small places,to lessen the direct heating caused by sunlight, use solar control Orientation in accordance with the direction of the sun and the wind, Wind Analysis to assess and maximise natural ventilation Energy Performance: for WWR and energy efficiency.

Conclusion

The Surat Diamond Bourse is a major achievement for India, and it is sure to be a major asset for the diamond industry in the years to come. The SDB is expected to boost the diamond industry in Surat and help it to maintain its position as the global hub of diamond trading.
The way forward for the Surat Diamond Bourse is to continue to grow and expand. The SDB should attract more diamond professionals from around the world, and it should become a major centre for diamond research and development. The SDB should also work to promote ethical trade of diamonds.
