Bluesky: A new competitor for Twitter

Buzz around Bluesky
The Internet welcomes a potential alternative "Bluesky" to tech platform Twitter, which was hitting the headlines due to its new boss, Elon Musk. Bluesky is grabbing the spotlight due to the fact that the platform has been launched by one of the former Twitter CEOs, Jack Dorsey. Bluesky is available on iOS and Android.

Birth of Bluesky
Bluesky's origin dates back to 2019 with Jack Doresey's announcement to fund a small team within Twitter itself. Surprisingly, it became independent of Twitter in 2022, just before Elon Musk boarded Twitter's flight. Bluesky intended to provide more user autonomy and control over the content as well as the data, unlike traditional social media platforms.

How do I get started?
Since Bluesky is still undergoing testing, access is available to invitees only. Several jokes are being floated on the internet, narrating people mocking people for selling the app's invite code for a handsome amount. Although the company has yet to announce the date of its public release.

Reasons why Twitter will always have the upper hand:
No matter how much we try to demand a Musk-free setup, it is surely not a one-day process to substitute Larry Bird! And there exist numerous reasons for the above statement, which are as follows:
  • Community and Influencer Presence: Twitter has a vibrant community of users, including influential individuals, organisations, and public figures who actively engage with their followers. This creates opportunities for meaningful interactions and the amplification of content. Bluesky would need to attract and retain a diverse and engaged community, including influencers and thought leaders, to provide a similar level of engagement and relevance.
  • Third-Party Integrations: Twitter has an extensive API (application programming interface) that allows developers to integrate their services and applications with the platform. This enables a wide range of functionalities, such as social media management tools (hashtags and trends), analytics, and content curation. Bluesky may lack a comparable ecosystem of third-party integrations, limiting its flexibility and usefulness for users and developers.
  • Content Moderation: Twitter has faced challenges in effectively moderating its platform and dealing with issues such as harassment, hate speech, and misinformation. However, it has invested in improving its moderation efforts and implementing policies to address these concerns. Bluesky, being a relatively new platform, may not have developed robust content moderation mechanisms and policies

Bluesky and its undying spirit to compete:
The above points tell us why Twitter stands tall, but there are a few loopholes to which BlueSky has gained access:
  • Decentralised Social Networking: On traditional social networks, it is the app that controls what the users see and when they can actually see it. But Bluesky aims to give users more authority and control over their social media experience.
  • AT Protocol, the USP: On Twitter, the subscribers who are on the Twitter Blue team receive the most visibility on the app as they pay for an enhanced version of Twitter. Unlike Twitter, Bluesky is determined to create algorithms that are customizable in nature and leave it up to the users as to what, when, and how they want their content to look.
  • Controversy-free environment: Lately, there has been a buzz around with respect to a lot of controversial statements that are floated on Twitter, with people tapping on the post button without giving a single thought as to what the repercussions would look like. Hence, Bluesky would try to manoeuvre through this challenge and gradually transform it into an opportunity.

Conclusion
It is too early to say that Bluesky is the new Twitter. Just because Bluesky spent all day trending on Twitter or the fact that Bluesky was a hot topic in private Twitter chats does not make Bluesky replace Twitter, but yes, we surely can’t deny the fact that the Blue Larry bird is now open to competition!
